A bold and textured foliage plant, Begonia masoniana ‘Mountain’ is known for its dramatic, crinkled leaves and distinctive dark cross pattern. This variety has a slightly more rugged, sculptural look, making it a real statement piece for shelves or plant displays where its unique texture can shine.
Scientific Name
Begonia masoniana ‘Mountain’ (Iron Cross Begonia, named for the dark cross-shaped marking on its leaves)
Common Name
Iron Cross Begonia, Mountain Begonia
Origin
Derived from Begonia masoniana, native to southern China and Vietnam.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. Lower light is tolerated but may reduce growth and vibrancy.
Water
Allow the top layer of soil to dry out between waterings. Keep the soil lightly moist but never waterlogged. Reduce watering in winter.
Humidity
Thrives in higher humidity. Ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, or grouped with other plants. Avoid misting directly onto the leaves, as this can cause spotting or damage to the textured surface.
Soil
Use a well-draining, airy mix. A houseplant compost with added perlite or bark works well to keep roots healthy.
Food
Feed every 2–4 waters during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Reduce feeding in autumn and winter.
Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 18–24°C. Avoid temperatures below 12°C and keep away from cold drafts.
Pet-safe
Toxic if ingested, so keep out of reach of pets and children.
Sprouts Top Tips
If leaves start to droop or soften, check the soil before watering. These begonias are more sensitive to overwatering than underwatering.
Extras
This plant grows from a rhizome, meaning it can spread slowly across the surface of the soil over time.
Did You Know?
The “Iron Cross” marking on Begonia masoniana is a natural adaptation that may help protect the plant from intense light in its native habitat.
