Add a splash of bright green with this dense, wiry ornamental grass. Hardy throughout the UK down to -20°C.

Add a splash of year-round colour to your garden with this evergreen, bright green grass. It can grow up to half a metre upwards and outwards, and will add a splash of bright yellow-green wherever you place it in your garden. Make sure it gets some sun, and has enough to drink whilst not being sat in a puddle, and it should thrive in your garden, reaching maturity in 2-5 years, and possibly producing bronze-coloured flowers in summer.

Evergreen
Grass: tufted
Foliage year-round, flowers possible in summer. Seed heads persist into winter and add interest too.

Scientific Name
Deschampsia flexuosa ‘AmiLime’ (Deschamps' zigzag plant, cultivar: AmiLime)

Common Name
Wavy Hair Grass

Origin
The species is native to grasslands across Eurasia, Africa and the Americas; this specific plant originated in cultivation though.

Pruning Tips
Cut old stems back to the ground in early spring to make way for new growth

Wildlife Value
This plant is deer-resistant but will provide ground cover for insects and can provide seeds for birds into winter if its seedheads are left on the plant.

Positioning
This grass likes some sun, so put it somewhere in full sun or partial shade to keep it happy. It can grow in both sheltered and exposed spots.

Water
This plant is drought-tolerant, so just keep an eye on it in very dry weather

Soil
Soil should be moist and well draining to keep this plant happy; ideally it should be acidic or neutral.

Food
Feed every few weeks with a liquid feed when growing in a container; in the ground, give it some fresh compost or mulch every year to keep the soil fertile and full of plant snacks

Pet-safe
Yes, this plant is not toxic and is listed by the RSPCA as safe for pets. Just make sure they don't eat the lot as that won't be best for your pet or the plant.

Sprouts Top Tips
This plant is quite low-maintenance so once you've got it planted out it's best not to fuss around it too much! Just remember, if you are growing it in a container or pot, it will need more attention, including more regular water and food from you.
