Elegant and highly sought after, Hoya elliptica is a true collector’s species renowned for its extraordinary foliage. Its large, oval leaves are beautifully patterned with a striking network of pale green veins against a rich dark green background, creating an almost mosaic-like appearance. The bold veining makes each leaf a natural work of art, while its climbing or trailing vines add graceful structure as the plant matures. Given the right conditions, Hoya elliptica may also reward patient growers with clusters of delicate white flowers, each with a soft pink centre and a light, sweet fragrance.

Scientific Name
Hoya elliptica

Common Name
Wax Plant, Porcelain Flower, Wax Vine

Origin
Native to Malaysia, Thailand and parts of Southeast Asia, where it grows as an epiphyte in warm, humid tropical forests beneath the tree canopy.

Light
Thrives in bright, indirect light. Avoid prolonged direct midday sun, which can scorch the foliage, although gentle morning or late afternoon sun is beneficial.

Water
Allow the top third of the potting mix to dry before watering thoroughly. Hoya elliptica prefers evenly moist but never waterlogged compost, so always ensure excess water can drain away freely.

Humidity
Prefers moderate to high humidity and benefits from levels above 60% where possible. Good airflow alongside increased humidity will encourage healthy growth.

Soil
Grow in a chunky, free-draining houseplant mix containing bark, perlite and peat-free compost or coco coir. Excellent drainage and airflow around the roots are essential.

Food
Feed every three to four weeks during spring and summer using a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows.

Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 18–28°C and should be protected from temperatures below 15°C.

Pet-safe
Hoyas are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. However, chewing any houseplant may cause mild stomach upset in some pets.

Sprouts Top Tips
Hoya elliptica is grown primarily for its spectacular foliage, so keeping the leaves looking their best is key. Provide plenty of bright, indirect light, avoid overwatering, and maintain good humidity to encourage large, beautifully marked leaves. If you choose to let it climb rather than trail, you’ll often be rewarded with larger foliage and a more vigorous plant. Never remove old flower spurs, as Hoyas bloom repeatedly from the same points year after year.
