Elegant and gently wild, Lepismium houlletianum is a softly cascading epiphytic cactus with long, ribbon-like stems that trail beautifully from hanging pots or high shelves. Native to tropical forests rather than deserts, it thrives in bright, filtered light and enjoys more humidity than your average cactus. Its stems may flush with pink or red tones in strong light, and with the right care, it can bloom with delicate, starry flowers followed by small, colourful fruits. A low-maintenance beauty with a jungle twist!
Scientific Name
Lepismium houlletianum
(houlletianum = named after French horticulturist M. Houllet)
Common Name
Trailing Jungle Cactus, Houllet’s Lepismium
Origin
Native to the tropical rainforests of Bolivia and Brazil, where it grows as an epiphyte on trees in humid, shaded environments.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Tolerates some morning or late afternoon sun, but avoid strong midday rays. Will trail and grow beautifully in a sun-dappled window or conservatory.
Water
Water when the top third of the soil feels dry. Unlike desert cacti, Lepismium prefers a bit more consistent moisture, especially in spring and summer – but always let excess water drain. Water sparingly in winter.
Humidity
Enjoys moderate to high humidity. It will tolerate average indoor levels but thrives with occasional misting or in a naturally humid space like a bathroom or greenhouse.
Soil
Use a light, airy cactus or orchid-style mix, ideally with added bark and perlite. This mimics the loose, well-draining organic matter it grows in naturally on tree branches.
Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks in the growing season with a diluted cactus or epiphyte fertiliser. Pause feeding during winter dormancy.
Temperature
Prefers 16–26°C. Protect from cold draughts and avoid exposure below 10°C.
Pet-safe
Yes – Lepismium houlletianum is considered non-toxic to pets and humans.
Sprouts Top Tips
Let it trail! This plant shines in hanging pots where its long, flattened stems can drape and catch the light. If you’re lucky, mature plants may surprise you with clusters of pale yellow or pinkish blooms followed by tiny fruits.
