A compact stunner with dramatic flair, Peperomia columbiana ‘Metallica’ is a slow-growing, foliage-forward houseplant that sparkles in the right light. Its small, deep bronze-green leaves shimmer with a metallic sheen, and the undersides glow with rich burgundy tones. Forming a tight, upright rosette as it matures, this variety stays tidy and manageable – ideal for desks, plant shelves, or grouped terrarium-style displays.
Scientific Name
Peperomia columbiana ‘Metallica’
(columbiana = “from Colombia”; ‘Metallica’ = named for the plant’s lustrous foliage finish)
Common Name
Metallic Radiator Plant, Peperomia ‘Metallica’, Shimmer Peperomia
Origin
Native to the cloud forests of Colombia, where it grows in moist, shaded, and humid conditions – a natural understory plant.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Too much direct sun may fade the colour or scorch the leaves. It will tolerate medium light, but the metallic sheen is most vivid with consistent filtered brightness.
Water
Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. This Peperomia stores moisture in its stems and leaves, so it’s best to err on the side of under-watering rather than overwatering. Always allow excess to drain.
Humidity
Loves moderate to high humidity. Will thrive in naturally humid spaces or benefit from occasional misting or a nearby pebble tray.
Soil
Use a well-draining houseplant mix with added perlite, fine bark, or sand to improve airflow around the roots. Avoid heavy or compacted soils.
Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength. No feeding is needed in winter.
Temperature
Ideal range is 18–24°C. Protect from cold draughts and avoid temperatures below 15°C.
Pet-safe
Yes – Peperomia species are non-toxic to pets and humans.
Sprouts Top Tips
Perfect for a bright shelf or mixed display – its dark, shimmering foliage contrasts beautifully with pale or trailing plants. Wipe leaves gently to enhance their metallic sheen and keep dust at bay.
