This fern is a hybrid created between two different species, something which has given it beautiful foliage and made it more tolerant of our homes. Like the Blue Star fern, its fronds grow like leafy hands on the ends of long stems, but this fern's foliage is more bright green than silver-blue, and its leaves are also more wavy at the edges. This distinctive leaf shape creates interest in any houseplant collection, and as its foliage overflows any pot it grows in it's a great option for a hanging pot or shelf, where the side view will show it off to its best advantage.

Scientific Name
xPhlebosia ‘Nicolas Diamond’ (Phlebosia from Phlebodium, vein-like, and Pyrrosia, meaning red. Cultivar: Nicolas diamond)

This hybrid fern is a cross between the fast-growing Phlebodium and the cold-hardy Pyrrosia, combining the best traits of both species.

Common Name(s)
Nicolas Diamond Fern, Footed Fern

Origin
This plant is a hybrid bred in a nursery, but its parent plants are native to tropical areas in the east of the Americas (Phlebodium aureum) and East Asia (Pyrrosia lingua)

Light
Prefers bright, filtered light or partial shade. Avoid direct sunlight as it can scorch the leaves.

Water
Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.

Humidity
Thrives in high humidity; keep it away from any operating heaters and consider using a pebble tray to increase local humidity if you notice it's drying out and going crispy.

Soil
A soil blend specifically designed for ferns works well, with components such as coir and sand to retain moisture and promote healthy root growth. Repot every few years in spring as the plant grows.

Food
Feed with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser every four waters during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce to every six in autumn and winter.

Temperature
Enjoys temperatures between 18-24°C. Don't let it get below 12°C for long periods in winter.

Pet-safe
Yes, the Phlebosia is generally considered non-toxic to pets, making it a safe choice for homes with animals.

Sprouts Top Tips
Monitor for dry leaf tips, which may indicate low humidity or underwatering. Rotate the plant periodically for even growth as it will naturally lean towards light sources.

Extras
Phlebosia ‘Nicolas Diamond’ is an excellent choice for hanging baskets or as a houseplant due to its cascading nature.
