Vibrant and eye-catching, the Purple Mini African Violet produces clusters of deep violet-purple blooms that stand out against its neat rosettes of soft, velvety green leaves. Compact in form and long-flowering, it’s perfect for brightening shelves, desks, and windowsills with rich colour throughout the year.

Scientific Name
Saintpaulia ionantha (commonly used in horticulture; now reclassified as Streptocarpus ionanthus, section Saintpaulia)

Synonyms
Streptocarpus sect. Saintpaulia; Streptocarpus ionanthus (sect. Saintpaulia)

Common Name
African Violet, Mini African Violet

Origin
Cultivated variety; original wild species native to the cloud forests of Tanzania and south-eastern Kenya.

Light
Thrives in bright, indirect light. A north- or east-facing window is ideal. Too much direct sun can scorch the foliage, while insufficient light will reduce blooming.

Water
Keep the compost lightly moist, allowing the top to dry before watering again. Water from the base to avoid wetting the fuzzy leaves, which can cause spotting. Always use room-temperature water.

Humidity
Prefers moderate humidity. Do not mist; instead, use a pebble tray or keep among other plants to gently raise moisture levels.

Soil
Grow in a free-draining African violet compost, or a light mix with added perlite. Repot every 1–2 years into a pot just slightly bigger than the root ball.

Food
Feed every 2–3 weeks during spring and summer with a fertiliser high in potash to promote abundant flowering. Reduce feeding in winter.

Temperature
Ideal range is 18–24°C. Keep away from cold draughts and avoid placing directly against chilly windows in winter.

Pet-safe
Non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Sprouts Top Tips
Pinch off faded blooms and old leaves to encourage fresh flowers and keep the rosette looking compact and healthy.

Extras
This rich purple form is one of the most popular mini African violets, prized for its bold colour and reliable repeat blooming.
