A bold, architectural houseplant with glossy, palmate leaves held on sturdy stems, Schefflera actinophylla ‘Golden Amate’ is prized for its rich green foliage edged and marbled with warm golden-yellow tones. More compact and slower-growing than the standard Umbrella Tree, this cultivar makes an excellent statement plant for bright interiors without overwhelming the space. Its upright form and lush canopy bring an instant sense of structure and greenery to homes and workspaces alike.
Scientific Name
Schefflera actinophylla ‘Golden Amate’ (radiating rays, referring to the umbrella-like leaf arrangement)
Traditionally classified within the Schefflera genus, some species have been reclassified into the genus Heptapleurum by botanists. However, Schefflera actinophylla remains widely sold and recognised under its original name in horticulture and the houseplant trade.
Synonyms
Sometimes listed as Heptapleurum actinophyllum ‘Golden Amate’
Common Name
Umbrella Tree, Golden Umbrella Tree
Origin
Native to northern Australia and New Guinea, where it grows as a tropical tree in warm, humid environments.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Tolerates medium light, but growth will slow and variegation may fade. Avoid strong direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.
Water
Allow the top few centimetres of compost to dry out between waterings. Water more regularly during spring and summer, reducing frequency in autumn and winter. Avoid overwatering, as consistently wet soil can lead to root issues.
Humidity
Enjoys moderate humidity but adapts well to average household conditions. Occasional misting or placement near a pebble tray can be beneficial, especially in winter.
Soil
Use a free-draining houseplant compost with added perlite or grit for improved airflow around the roots. Repot every 2–3 years, or when the plant becomes rootbound.
Food
Feed every 2–3 waters during the growing season with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser. Reduce feeding significantly in the cooler months.
Temperature
Ideal temperature range is 18–26°C. Keep away from cold draughts and avoid temperatures below 12°C.
Pet-safe
Toxic if ingested. Keep out of reach of pets and children.
Sprouts Top Tips
Rotate the plant every few weeks to encourage even growth and prevent it from leaning towards the light.
Extras
This cultivar is bred for stronger stems and improved resistance to leaf drop compared to standard Schefflera actinophylla.
Did You Know?
In its natural habitat, Schefflera actinophylla can grow into a large flowering tree, producing dramatic red flower spikes that attract birds and pollinators – though flowering indoors is very rare.
