Elegant and airy, Begonia fuchsioides is a charming species begonia known for its slender stems, glossy green leaves, and delicate red pendant flowers that resemble those of a fuchsia. These bright, dangling blooms appear over long periods of the year, creating a graceful display that contrasts beautifully with the plant’s fresh green foliage.
Unlike many begonias grown mainly for their leaves, this species is especially loved for its flowers. Its light, slightly arching growth makes it perfect for bright windowsills or trailing gently from a shelf, where the vivid red blooms can be fully appreciated.
With the right balance of light, moisture, and warmth, Begonia fuchsioides is an easy and rewarding houseplant that can flower repeatedly indoors.
Scientific Name
Begonia fuchsioides (fuchsia-like begonia)
Begonia fuchsioides was first described in 1845 by the German botanist Friedrich Anton Wilhelm Miquel, based on plants from tropical Central America.
Common Name
Fuchsia Begonia
Origin
Native to Central America, particularly Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, where it grows in warm, humid forests.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. A position near an east or north-facing window works well. Avoid strong direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Water
Keep the soil lightly moist but never soggy. Allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering a little during winter when growth slows.
Humidity
Enjoys moderate to high humidity. It grows well in kitchens, bathrooms, or near other plants where humidity levels are naturally higher.
Soil
Use a light, well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter. A houseplant compost blended with perlite or bark helps maintain good drainage while retaining moisture.
Food
Feed every 2–4 weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser. Pause feeding in winter.
Temperature
Thrives in temperatures between 18–26°C. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 12°C.
Pet-safe
Toxic if ingested, so keep out of reach of pets and children.
Sprouts Top Tips
If stems become long and leggy, lightly prune the plant back in spring to encourage bushier growth and more flowers.
Extras
This begonia can flower for much of the year indoors when grown in bright conditions.

The genus Begonia contains more than 2,000 species, making it one of the largest genera of flowering plants.
