This majestic Dragon Tree really makes a statement, with its explosion of narrow, blade-like foliage atop the thin trunks of the tree. Each deep forest-green leaf is bordered with stripes of pale and pink-red variegation, which really helps this plant stand out as it looks truly flashy! Choose this funky fountain of foliage to add a splash of colour to a bright corner of your home and it will reward you with its stunning colour and distinctive silhouette.
Scientific Name
Dracaena marginata 'Bicolor' (dragon plant with a margin, cultivar: two-colours)
This name is a synonym of Dracaena reflexa var. angustifolia; both names are understood in horticulture.
Common Name
Dragon Tree, Madagascar Dragon Tree, Marginate Dracaena
Origin
This species of Dracaena is native to Madagascar.
Light
This plant loves a bright spot as long as it doesn't get the strongest midday sun falling on its leaves. A loss of variegation in its new leaves signals it's getting too little light; a washed-out appearance that it's getting too much.
Water
Let half of the soil to dry out in between waters, and reduce your watering further in winter, or in darker locations. The pot should feel light when it needs a water.
Humidity
Average humidity is fine for this plant, just don't keep it too near a radiator which would dry it out!
Soil
Use well-draining soil to keep this plant from sitting too soggy; a mix with added bark, such as one designed for Ficus plants, would suit it well. Repot every three years in spring as it grows.
Food
Feed every four waters in the growing season, reduce to every six in autumn and winter.
Temperature
Ideal temperature is 20-32°C; make sure it does not get colder than 12°C in winter.
Pet-safe
No, this plant is toxic to pets and small humans.
Sprouts Top Tips
Keep an eye out for overwatering with your dragon tree! It can cause many issues and damage the root system. Look out for yellowing leaves, especially close to the soil.
