With its silvery, metallic foliage and subtle purple undersides, Tradescantia zebrina ‘Silver Sicilian’ is a striking trailing plant that adds shimmering texture to shelves, plant stands or hanging pots. The elongated leaves are striped with pale silver and green, giving it a distinctive variegated look with an almost frosted finish. Fast-growing and low-fuss, it’s ideal for anyone after a quick-growing, decorative houseplant.
Scientific Name
Tradescantia zebrina ‘Silver Sicilian’ (named for its zebra-like striping and geographical origin)
Previously classified as Zebrina pendula, it was reclassified into the Tradescantia genus. The genus name honours John Tradescant, a 17th-century English botanist and gardener to Charles I.
Common Name(s)
Silver Inch Plant, Silver Wandering Dude*, Wandering Jew* (⚠️ Outdated and considered derogatory – avoid using)
Origin
Native to Mexico and Central America; this cultivar was developed for ornamental use.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its vibrant variegation. Too little light can cause leggy growth and faded leaves. It can tolerate some gentle morning sun.
Water
Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Water thoroughly and let excess drain away. In winter, reduce frequency slightly.
Humidity
Likes moderate humidity. If air is dry, especially in winter, mist occasionally or group with other plants to raise ambient humidity.
Soil
A general-purpose peat-free houseplant compost with added drainage (like perlite or fine bark) works well.
Food
Feed every 2–4 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser. Pause feeding in winter.
Temp
Thrives between 16–24°C. Avoid cold draughts and temperatures below 10°C.
Pet-safe
Toxic if ingested – can cause stomach upset. Keep out of reach of pets and children.
Sprouts Top Tips
Pinch back the tips regularly to encourage bushier growth and prevent legginess. Snip off any straggly stems and propagate them in water – they root easily and make lovely gifts or refills for bare patches.
Extras
Fast-growing and forgiving, this Tradescantia is perfect for beginners and can be rejuvenated easily through regular trimming and propagation.
Did You Know?
The leaves of Tradescantia zebrina are slightly iridescent, appearing more silver or purple depending on the light – making it a favourite for plant photography and shelf styling.
