Bold, architectural, and wonderfully unusual, Fatsia polycarpa ‘Green Fingers’ is a striking tropical foliage plant with deeply divided, finger-like leaves that give it a dramatic sculptural appearance. Its glossy green foliage creates movement and texture, making it a brilliant statement plant for bright interiors, conservatories, or sheltered outdoor spaces during warmer months. Compared to traditional Japanese Aralias, this species has a much more exotic and jungle-like feel.

Fatsia polycarpa ‘Green Fingers’ (many-fruited fatsia)
Fatsia belongs to the Araliaceae family, alongside plants such as ivy (Hedera) and Schefflera. The genus name comes from the old Japanese word for “eight”, referring to the leaf lobes commonly seen in the group. Fatsia polycarpa is less commonly grown than Fatsia japonica and is prized for its more deeply divided foliage and tropical growth habit.

Origin
Native to Taiwan, where it grows in humid subtropical woodland environments.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate partial shade. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sun, especially indoors, as it may scorch the leaves. Outdoors, it does best in a sheltered spot with dappled shade.
Water
Water when the top few centimetres of soil begin to dry out. Keep the compost lightly moist during spring and summer but avoid overly wet conditions, especially during cooler months. Reduce watering slightly in winter.
Humidity
Enjoys moderate to high humidity and benefits from occasional misting or placement near other plants. It adapts reasonably well to average household humidity but will look its best in more humid conditions.
Soil
Use a rich but free-draining compost mix. A blend containing houseplant compost, bark, and perlite works particularly well. Repot every 2–3 years or when roots begin filling the pot.
Food
Feed every 2–4 weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter.
Temp
Prefers temperatures between 15–26°C. Protect from temperatures below 10°C and avoid cold draughts or sudden temperature drops.
Pet-safe
Generally considered low risk, but sap may cause mild irritation if ingested by pets or humans. As with most houseplants, it’s best kept out of reach of curious pets and children.
